What is Gender Affirming Breast Surgery?

Gender affirming breast surgery, or top surgery, reshapes the chest to match the patient’s gender identity. It helps transgender and nonbinary people feel more comfortable in their bodies and reduces stress or discomfort experienced through gender dysphoria.

Female-to-Male (FTM)

An FTM surgery, which is usually a mastectomy, involves removing breast tissue and shaping the nipples and areola to create a more masculine-looking chest. Various techniques are used during this surgery, depending on how much tissue is removed.

Male-to-Female (MTF)

An MTF surgery is very similar to a breast augmentation procedure, which is typically performed on biological women. MTF surgery is typically performed on patients who have already been on estrogen for at least one year. This allows sufficient breast tissue to grow before inserting implants. Patients are able to customize how they want their breasts to look, including the type, size, shape, and placement of the implants.

Combining My Gender Affirming Breast Surgery with Other Procedures

There are other procedures that can be combined with gender affirming breast surgery to enhance your results and refine your figure. Combining procedures can reduce the number of recovery periods you have to go through and the overall cost. Common procedures combined with gender affirming breast surgery include:

Adding liposuction to gender-affirming breast surgery helps refine your final breast contours by removing stubborn fat around the edges of the treatment area. For FTM breast surgery, liposuction smooths the transition between the chest and armpits. For MTF breast surgery, removing fat can help accentuate the breasts and remove bulges in various areas of the body.

How to Begin Your Gender Affirming Breast Surgery Journey

The first thing you will need to do is book a consultation with Dr. Soto. This consultation is completely confidential, so we encourage you to be honest about your concerns and goals so he can determine the best course of action.

  • Dr. Soto will introduce himself and use your preferred pronouns
  • He will listen to your goals, concerns, and expected outcomes from the surgery
  • You’ll review your medical history together, including any medications you are taking, whether you have any allergies, and whether you have gotten any other treatments in the past
  • If you are getting MTF gender affirming breast surgery, you will discuss the different types of breast implants, sizes, shape, and how you want them inserted. For FTM gender affirming breast surgery, you will discuss how you want your chest to look, including scar placement and nipple size
  • Dr. Soto will examine your breasts to get a better understanding of your goals and plan the surgery
  • Based on the above factors, Dr. Soto will design a one-of-a-kind treatment plan and go over estimated costs

What to Expect on the Day of Gender Affirming Breast Surgery

Do not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before your surgery to avoid aspiration. You’ll arrive at our Orlando office and go over your treatment plan with Dr. Soto. When you are both ready to begin, general anesthesia will be administered to put you in a deep state of relaxation, where you will not be able to feel or remember the surgery.

Depending on whether you get FTM or MTF gender affirming breast surgery, Dr. Soto will create the incisions and remove the desired amount of breast tissue or create a pocket for the breast implants. The incisions will be closed with sutures. If other procedures are included in your plan, Dr. Soto will perform those as well. A compression garment will be applied, and you’ll be woken up from the anesthesia.

You will be given time to adjust to the anesthesia, and we will check your vitals.

Gender Affirming Breast Surgery Recovery

Your Guide to Post-Gender Affirming Breast Surgery Care

Following Dr. Soto’s instructions on how to recover is an essential part of the treatment journey. It’s crucial that you get plenty of sleep and rest, eat a balanced diet, and take short walks to support circulation every day after surgery for the first few days to a week.

While these short walks are acceptable, do not do any strenuous exercise or activities. Wear your compression garment as directed. When you sleep and rest, make sure to lie on your back to avoid putting pressure on your breasts and causing asymmetry or reopening your incisions.

Take pain medications to reduce pain and discomfort and attend all follow-up appointments at our Orlando office.

How Much Does Gender Affirming Breast Surgery Cost in Orlando, FL?

The cost of gender affirming breast surgery in Orlando differs from patient to patient. The cost is dependent on several factors, including the extent of the surgery, whether you get MTF or FTM surgery, the materials and techniques used during the procedure, and anesthesia and facility fees.

Dr. Soto will explain the different cost factors during your consultation.
