Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)
Who It’s For
Men and boys may experience an abnormal development of the breast
tissue, producing an appearance that can be very disconcerting. This
most often occurs during puberty, and in late middle age; when seen
in pubertal boys, it most often will resolve with maturity. If resolution
does not occur as expected, or when it is seen later in life, surgical
intervention may be required. Ideal candidates are otherwise healthy
and have had an evaluation by their primary physician, in order to
exclude other possible, hormonal causes of abnormal breast development.
How It’s Done
Depending on the severity of the problem, and the individual patient’s
anatomy and goals, multiple plastic surgery techniques may be brought
to bear in order to achieve the best outcome for the patient. This
may include liposuction, ultrasound assisted liposuction, skin tightening,
or a combination of these.
Recovery
Recovery is usually smooth and rapid, with most patients returning
to everyday activities within a few days. You will need to wear a
supportive vest for compression for between 4-6 weeks after surgery,
to encourage skin tightening and prevent fluid collections. You should
avoid upper body exercise for the same time period, but lower body
exercise is permitted as soon as you are comfortable.
For properly selected patients, these options allow for an excellent
improvement with very little down time.
